MamaTENS is a maternity tens machine, used throughout labour to help suppress the pain experienced during all stages of labour. It is particularly effective in early labour. It works by stimulating your body’s own natural defences against pain for safe, drug-free pain relief during labour. The MamaTENS machine transmits gentle electrical impulses through your skin via four self-adhesive pads, positioned on your back. These gentle impulses attack pain in two ways: by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body’s own pain-relieving hormones, and by stimulating the nerves to block pain signals before they reach the brain.

Why should I use TENS?
|
|
|
|
Most expectant mothers prefer to keep drug use to a minimum even though they expect labour to be painful. The use of TENS immediately pre-birth helps manage this pain and, because it helps, the use of pain killers such as analgesics and epidural injections is minimised and may even be negated altogether. TENS does not make the mother drowsy or cause her to lose consciousness and so a TENS-birth should result in a more pleasant and meaningful experience.

When should I use TENS?
Throughout labour. MamaTENS is used to help suppress the pain you experience during all stages of labour. It is particularly effective in early labour.

 How is the TENS machine best used?
TENS works best if it used immediately labour starts because it takes up to an hour or so for the body to respond to the electrical impulses and start to release pain-suppressing endorphins. MamaTens is preset to cope with pain relief right up to the birth. The user should start with the intensity controls at their lowest settings and increase these gradually as her contractions get stronger.
To counter the pain experienced during the 1st stage of labour, the MamaTens’ Programme A is pre-set to a frequency and pulse that will trigger the release of endorphins. This will relax the expectant mother and relieve her pain. She can get additional pain relief during contractions or at any time by pressing the BOOST BUTTON on the side of the MamaTens to switch from Mode A1 to Mode A2. Pressing again returns the stimulation to mode A1. As the expectant mother’s labour progresses to the 2nd stage of labour her contractions will intensify and become more frequent. When she feels the need for a heightened form of pain relief she can change the programme setting to Programme B.
As before, extra pain relief is available during contractions or at any time by pressing the BOOST BUTTON to switch from Mode B1 to Mode B2. The 3rd stage of labour occurs just before the cervix is fully dilated and the expectant mother starts to push. Programme C1 should be used now. This programme has a special function that “ramps up” the level of intensity during the final contractions while the BOOST BUTTON is depressed. Once released, the intensity quickly drops back to the level at which it was previously set. Some mothers just rely on MamaTens right up to the birth of their baby and make use of no other pain relief options.
MamaTens strongly recommends that an expectant mother should acquaint herself with the machine BEFORE she needs to use it! Whether the MamaTens is hired or bought, it should be unpacked and assembled, the instructions should be studied and the machine should be thoroughly test-run. This needs to be done at home before it is time to depart for the hospital.

The MamaTens stimulation programmes have been pre-set, so that you don't have to fiddle around with the controls. You can take MamaTens into hospital with you, or use it at home.
MamaTens will help you to relax and prepare for the birth of your baby, taking you right through labour, from the first contractions to delivery.
MamaTens is also useful after the birth, easing after-pains as your uterus contracts, and helping you to manage the discomfort of an episiotomy or tear.
When labour begins, your midwife or birth partner can attach the electrodes to your back, as shown in the picture. Plug the electrodes into your control unit and you are ready to begin using Mamatens. Positive effects can be felt immediately.
It has a user variable ‘low-level' output for the relief of mild pain and a ‘high-Ievel' output (known as Boost mode), for enhanced pain suppression during labour contractions.

Comments: The Mama-tens unit is really so much better than the unit I hired through Lloyds pharmacy with my last birth two years ago. The choice of neck, belt or hand to hold it is important to a woman in labour. The settings are endless and very much needed. Over all this though, the thing that got to me most was the booster. It worked! I didn’t't even keep forgetting to switch it back off, (like the previous unit I hired from Lloyds)as it really did it's job. Thank you so much for a fantastic real help!!
